One Door Cinema Club (ODCC) is a group of people who put on live events and are currently in production on our YouTube channel and podcast. We talk about film and faith, and on our poster we have written “digging deep for the movie geek.”

Now sometimes, people wonder how geeky are these guys really?

Well, we are bible geeks, we love studying theology (the things of God), and love showing people where that is in all the films and stories they all love and watch.

But we really are film, TV and comic geeks. We also come from Swanage!

“What’s Swanage got to do with the price of fish?” I hear you say! Well, growing up in Swanage, New Year’s Eve was a big thing for us as it was the second largest unorganised fancy dress party in the world!

Advertised on the Paris Metro apparently, people would come from all over to join in with the festivities. We planned our costumes for months. So, naturally, our family has been cosplaying before it was cool!

During the last ten years at ODCC live events, we’ve had Star Wars and Marvel characters at events, on the doors, and surprising people. We’ve even had Darth Vader turn up and scare the popcorn out of everyone, and Force-choke our speaker!

This year, some of the ODCC team went to Bournemouth Comic-Con wearing the cosplay costumes we’ve been making.

We met some great people, also in Star Wars and Sci-Fi costumes, and spent a lot of time having photos taken with fellow geeks of all ages! Little kids running up for photos and seeing them so excited. It was a blast!

One little girl came over with her mum as we were having a sit-down break and her mum said, “She’s just asked if she can give you a little present?” She then went in turn to give all three X-Wing pilots a little resin X-Wing she had made.

We were genuinely moved by such a lovely act of kindness. She even gave our Imperial friend a little gift… but not an X-Wing!

The Comic-Con community are so lovely, it’s always a great day out chatting with people.

We shopped around the stands, looking at comics, very cool light sabers and merch stands, met K.I.T.T. the talking car, and saw some of the panel guests signing autographs.

Comics have also been a part of our journey into stories, the folk tales of our people!

Maddy is into her Marvel characters such as Silk and The Amazing Spider-Man.

I grew up on a diet of Spider-Man, Batman, Battle, 2000 A.D., Judge Dredd, and then into the graphic novels like The Watchmen, The Dark Night Returns by Frank Miller, Dark Horse comics, runs of Star Wars, Terminator, Predator, Aliens, etc. One particular favourite Marvel character of mine was Daredevil. I loved the man without fear! I also loved that he had two personas other than Daredevil: he was Matt Murdock (who was blind) and also his own twin brother, Mike Murdock, (who could see) and would juggle balls while talking to people!

It’s always great bumping into our friends, and especially friends who attended our ODCC live events.

The next Comic-Con is in September and we will be there!
